If you have multiple pledges from donors, would you enter the pledge on UWay's record as one pledge (total of all donors' pledges) or separate as pledges for each donor? We just started receiving this type of gift so this topic is very timely for me!

It really depends on if you can track the individual donor pledges with the payment disbursements from UW. In the past, users just receive a check from the United Way with the donor names, and sometimes the amounts given. If that is the case, the pledge would be from the UW. Since the money is coming from UW, I would place the pledge on the UW record and soft credit the donor in either case because you are going to collect from UW. You can put a pledge on the donor record and then apply the payment from UW to the pledge, but that becomes very tricky and you need to have really good policies and procedures and data entry practices.

Ooh, thanks. We only have 2 donors right now, so it's not too hard to keep track of. I guess I'll enter the lump sum of their pledges on UW's record and I'll be entering "other" type gifts on the individuals' records.

I use Other gift types also for one very important reason. You can not soft credit a constituent for anything more than the original gift amount. This is surprisingly not a a problem if more than one donor is pledging to UW but is a huge problem if only one person is.

So if two donors are each giving $500 (a total of $1,000) you are getting $900 due to the 10% fee so you create a pledge for $900 and you can soft credit each of the two people for $500 each (for a total of $1,000 in soft credits).

But if a single donor pledges $1,000 and you are getting $900 you would create a pledge for $900 and the most you can soft credit that one donor for is $900.

Kind of messed up in my opinion. Other gifts have always worked well for me.
