Hello folks!

I am starting to investigate a 'better' way for our organization to track assets (the usual stuff, computers, software, blackberry devices, etc.) I say 'better' since right now it is tracked mostly by memory and an old excel spreadsheet.

I just want to be able to know how many computers we have, how old they are and what software is on them. And then be able to run simple reports/queries on that information when needed. This can be entered manually (it doesn't have to be retrieved from the network). I was going to set up a simple access database, but thought there might already be something on the market that does this (so I don't have to re-invent the wheel).

Anyone doing this successfully? Or have some suggestions on some software that might work?

Thanks!!!

Barb

We use SpiceWorks, it is free and it will discover all hardware and software on your network.

I second the Spiceworks vote. It detected most networked hardware and software on our systems with a few minor misses.

Way easier than tracking in separate databases where you have to do all the data entry and maintenance.

You can also track licensing and run an IT help desk from Spiceworks.

I third the vote for Spiceworks. If you ahve Financial Edge you can set it up in there as well.

Thanks for the info guys!! I have checked out Spiceworks.

One question (that I couldn't get confirmed from the website) - can you limit the machines that are scanned? We are on the hospital network so obviously don't want to scan the ENTIRE network, just the machines that are 'owned' by the Foundation. Thoughts?

Again....thanks!

Yes, if you have an excel list of your machines. You can take that list create a new excel list of the computers you want to scan import the list to spiceworks as a group and scan away.

Don't ask me how all that was done as I have not used it in a couple years.
