Let's see if I can do this without blabbering (or crying).
I know that an Organizational constituent can have an individual relationship which you can then assign a contact type. A colleague in charge of student awards and endowments has come to me with a problem that provides a different slant on things. She has several individuals(with no organization ties) that want to provide endowments. She would like to mark them up as an "Endowment" contact type but, alas, there is no way that I am aware of an individual can be marked as a contact type.
Suggestions discussed:
1. Markup the individual with "Endowment Contact" in the constituent code. My only reservation is that I don't like to rely too heavily on this table and have it be a "catch all"
2. Create a "Dummy" proposal and:
- Create name as : Student Awards
- Create Purpose as : Student Awards
- Assign the fund as Student Awards Endowment
- Link it(I'm not sure how or if it's posiible) to the gift
This way the "Contact" (although not marked as such) can be queried by Prospect proposal fund equals Student Awards Endowment AND Key Indicator equals Individual
COMMENTS....SUGGESTIONS ...THE REAL WAY OF DOING IT????
Thanks,
Mike

How about an additional Addressee/Salutation type of "Endowment Contact"? that way if the individual's record is a joint record of Mr. and Mrs., and Mrs. is the Endowment Contact you could set it so it would be Ms. Elaine Smith.

Thanks Drew. I had considered that as a way off option only because I was unsure how that worked in the end. I don't know enough about RE yet and I wasn't quite sure if I would actually be creating a relation ship whereby the individual would be the main contact for the ENTIRE fund or just their contribution.
Sincerely,
Mike
P.S Heard alot of great stuff about you Big Guy. Looking forward to meeting you in Charleston if you're attending

Do you mean that they are a prospect for an endowment gift? Do you have the prospect tab (RE: Search Module). I would classify them there as an endowment prospect. If you do not have the module I would use an attribute of prospect type and have a table of possible prospect types (planned giving, major gift, endowment, etc.) and you can use it on all of your giving prospects.
Thanks Michael!
That's an angle I hadn't even considered!

They are not really a prospect as you would most likely define them. They came to us with cash in hand wishing to creat an endowment gift. Yes we do have the prospect tab and thank-you for your suggestion!

Try creating a fund relationship between the individual and their endowed fund.
Drew
Just further to your response Drew..would both the Relationship and Reciprocal in the individual relationship for the fund both be "contact"?

It's completely flexible. I think that we have "Donor" and "Contact" on the individual side and "Endowed Fund" and "Special Interest Fund" on the fund side.

It is better to live your destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else's life with perfection.
The fund relationship thing will probably not work since at NAIT there is
only 1 fund for student award endowments. It all goes into a big pot.
DISCLOSURE: Mike is the new me at NAIT and probably smells way better...
Every other scenraio I worked on with Sabrina for annual awards ran into
this issue and we solved it by having 2 seperate processes - one for
individuals and one for orgs. She is using the term "Contact Type" because
that was her experience with the Annual Awards invoices I built. What she
really wants is a way to uniquely identify them, and that sugests a
constituent code, attribute, or addressee.
She's going to want a way to pull them out later on for invoices, letters,
etc.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
Before you do anything make sure you ask her what she wants this for. Why
does she want to mark them that way?

Thanks Peter. I'm starting to run into that "one big pot". I'm pretty sure you're right and for ease of everything I guess I'm going to settle for the constituent code at this point.
Thanks for the DISCLOSURE but to be honest, people are playing musical offices today and since computers my resposibility....got any fly repellent????

Is that on the GL side or the RE side? It is possible to have multiple funds in RE all point to the same GL account. In FE, they would be mapped to different projects within the same FE Fund. I'm not sure what NAIT is using for their GL, but there should be something similar.

I believe it is the RE side...but I'm too new. I'll investigate.

But, seriously folks, these are very important questions and they're the touhgest to get answers to. People take offense when asked. I don't think most of them know why.
