I am curious what others do when a student graduates from their institution.
We use constituency codes and start and end dates as follows:
Current Students have a start date when they arrived and end date and when the graduate or leave.
This constituent gets an additional constituency code with a new start date as an Alumni of the institution and is put at the top of the heirarcy within their record. We keep the other as a record of the years or time spent at our institituion.
Here is my dilemma, graduation is June 13th our fiscal year ends June 30th, what date do we use so the reporting is accurate for that year. They were only an alum for a couple days within that fiscal year? To keep things clean do I keep them as a current student until June 30th and turn everyone over on July 1? I am trying to set up a policy but I see pitfalls in both options for reporting in what date I choose?
How about using the Gift Constituent Code. That should default to the Primary Constituent Code at the time that the gift is recorded, but can be changed to any current constituent code. If you use that, any student giving will be coded as student giving, and if they happen to give right after graduation, they would be coded as alums.

We practice what Drew said. We tag the students as such, then convert to alum/non-degree alum. To keep all reports clean in RE, we track our financial reports based on the Gift Constituent Code. It's worked perfect so far.
