If you have the Prospect Tab, we use proposal attributes for this kind of thing.
We use the "Date Expected" field on the proposal itself. By the time they have a proposal, you should have a good idea of when to expect the actual money.
If you want something less concrete, I would suggest using a rating rather than a proposal attribute. That way you don't need to set up a proposal for a gift that they might possibly be ready to talk about in a year. Ratings is also part of the Prospect Tab.

I also agree that th date expected it probably best. We require that date and if unknown we ask that they estimate and put in the last day of the month, quarter or (as a last resort) fiscal year.
What are you using for prospect classification and status. If not using it for something else I might use Status.
