Data Protection

Hey,

I am in the process of learning the in's and out's of data protection and I wondered what everyone thought about having data stored on a excel spreadsheet.

I need to put a case forward to fellow fundraisers why this information should be stored on the raisers edge database.

Is the main reason for doing this is because with data being in excel you have no protection against data corruption?

All help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Ryan

Ryan - check out the Thread Old School - very new thread - it addresses the spreadsheet issue.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head:

Raiser's Edge is a relational database, excell is a spreadsheet
RE allows historical tracking of most data, excell is a spreadsheet
RE can assist in balancing with your finance office and track adjustments, write offs and changes, excell is a spreadsheet.

RE can allow mailings based on address type, address to and from date, excell is....
Constituency codes and education information can be traced in RE, excell is...

Actions and follow-ups can be managed in RE, excell is...

Good Luck!

What kinds of spreadsheets are staff insisting on using - what data do they contain?

Hi Ryan -

This may be a simplistic answer, but I think an Excel sheet may be cumbersome to manage over time. Are you tracking actions, events, etc..? I think you're better off keeping everyone in one place (RE). Also, the security settings in RE will help protect your data. If you're concerned about certain staff corrupting it, you can assign them view rights.
