Speed after Upgrade? Speed in general

Hi folks,

I have 2 questions about RE speed.

1) My team reports that performance slowed after upgrading to the most recent version. I am brand new, so I don't have a baseline to compare with. Has anyone else experienced this?

2) As I'm new to Mercy Corps, I am gathering some benchmarks for speed of opening records in general. Mercy Corps' database has about 400,000 constituent records and 1.5 million gifts recorded. Some typical speeds on different workstations in our office:
  • 10 seconds to open an existing constituent record
  • 7+ seconds while in a constituent record to open an existing notepad or move to the gifts tab
  • 45 seconds - 1+ minute to open new batch
If you have a database somewhere in our size range (i.e. 200k+ constituents), would you let me know your average time to perform the above operations?

Would you also let me know your gut reaction about the speeds noted above? Do they seem par for the course? Pretty fast? Pretty slow?

Thanks so much,
Faith

They seem slow to me, and I have about 140K constituents with about 300K gift records (maybe a few more). (Disclaimer: I also replaced our server last year, and only use about 1/3 of the CPU and Memory power available, even at maxed out users, so it might just be that I'm used to what I have)

What's the CPU and memory on the server? What else is running on that server that could be slowing it down? And what type of disk drives (and interface) are you using?

Those are all questions to look at for performance issues...

That looks pretty slow to me. Our speeds would be roughly:
  • 2 Seconds to open a constituent record
  • 1 - 2 seconds to open a Notepad or move to a different tab
  • 30 seconds to open a gift batch
That's with about twice as many constituents as you, running on version 7.80.

Looks slow to me too, although ours is nowhere near that size. That kind of lag would drive me round the twist!

Recommend checking what else is running on that server - any other memory/processor hogging databases (including email systems)? Disk speed and actual RAM on the server are important, too.

Network clogging can cause some lag, too, but don't think it would usually cause lag of that scale.

That's slow.

What hardware are you running on? Does it meet or exceed the minimum specs for the version in Blackbaud's specification page?

Thanks!

Thanks for all your replies - turns out that my workstation was damaged, and we're still investigating speed at the server level.
