So, I was working with IT yesterday to install the upgrade to RE7.83 from 7.81 patch 24. We were also installing the upgrades to FE & EE 7.75 and FAWebl on the same server.
We started with FE and that went fine and EE went fine after a little snafu unrelated to SQL.
When we got to the RE update, the SQL verification pops back the message that we're not using a compatible version of SQL Server 2000, i.e. SP4. We verified SP4 when we upgraded to 7.81. I think we clicked properties on the database icon in the system tray and looked up the version #. Not to mention that SP4 was a requirement for 7.81 and that install went smoothly without any issues for us.
We got Blackbaud on the phone and went to a different place to check out the SQL version, by right clicking properties on the database within the Server console. It says we're on SP3?
Assuming we are on SQL Server 2000 SP3, my question is why did the previous upgrades of RE, FE and EE go through when they too all required SP4? If the others went through, can I get this RE upgrade to go through as well by doing something differently? I'm not that familiar with the server side of things so I'm hoping somebody can turn the light on for me. Things just aren't adding up here.
We're up and running but I need to get to 7.83 or 7.84 rather soon.
Thanks.

Reason: better title
This is probably not the greatest advice, but I say just install SP4 and go ahead with your install.
I ran into a similar problem when upgrading to 7.82 (from 7.80). I forgot I was still on SP3a so when the install snagged, I just installed SP4 and off I went. I figured SP4's been around for awhile so what the heck.

The original installations may have been done through the "The Raiser's Edge.msi" file instead of the "Setup.exe" file. If this is true, it skips over all prerequisites during the instllation/update and would have missed what service pack SQL was on.
I suggest going through with SP4 though because if the installer has caught it now, it will always see it from now on. SP4 has been out since mid-2005, so you should be safe to use it I'd think.

Thanks everyone, we installed SP4 after toying with the idea of jumping to directly to SQL 2005.
