Service pack dilemma

I'm getting ready to install 7.82 on our test system. The server that I'll be using for testing is Win 2000 SP4 with SQL 2000 SP3. Now various pieces of documentation appear contradictory (at least to me it does). The update guide says that with SQL 2000 I must have SP4 but that since an instance of SQL 2000 exists, the installer won't install SQL 2005 Express. Other documentation says that if it finds SQL 2000 but with a service pack less than SP4, it will install SQL 2005 Express.

I was going to go ahead & install it with SQL 2000 SP3 just to see if it works ok but I don't want it to install SQL 2005 Express because this server is also used to test our student system (which only requires SP3).

Has anyone else run into this situation? What does your test server have on it? What is your experience with how much of a stickler RE is with service packs? Do I need to contact Blackbaud on this?

Thanks for your help!

My past experience has been if it says it needs a specific SP# and I try to install without the required number, I got an error message stating I need SP# to continue. I haven't plunged into 7.82 yet, so maybe the error doesn't appear!
Try it...then tell all of us what happens!!!

Can I ask why you don't want to install SQL 2000 SP4?

We experienced the same dilema.... If you upgrade your SQL Server 2000 Service Pack to Service Pack 4 and follow solution number BB329138 you should not experience any problems with your upgrade.

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for your responses. I'm glad to report that we did apply SP4 & I now have my test system for RE. Upgraded from 7.70 to 7.82!

Happy weekend!
