I've just tested a full clean install using the version with prerequsites, no Sample db on my Local Admin login on a Pentium 4 2.8GHZ with 512 RAM and it took under 8 minutes (On other PC's I'm sure this used to take 10 - 15+ using the wizard) You can monitor the progress via Task Manager, Processes , sort by Memory Usage and watch the msiexec.exe fly. In Event Viewer,System you can see the time the Windows installer starts. In Event Viewer,Application you can see the time it finished. You stiil have to run the patch updater afterwards - Can anyone find a way to include this as well?
I'm going to ask my IT dept if they can somehow include this in our desktop management software (LANdesk) for the next upgrade - I'll keep you posted.
Overall a handy .txt file to carry around on a flash drive for those like me that don't dream in code.
I tried it with a non-admin user and it didn't install. I thought maybe it would fail, but a Blackbaud person told me you didn't need admin rights to install RE 7.81.
I used Active Directory and group policies to push it out and that worked.
This was after I'd installed the patch. I presumed that the patch updated the deploy kit, but I couldn't be sure.
However for some people when they started up RE it said it wanted to upgrade itself again. If they cancelled that then it worked.
There is a way of "rolling" a patch into an upgrade, but I didn't investigate that.
To follow up on this. The patch didn't update the deploy kit. It needs to be installed as an administrator, and can't be done using automatic update. :-(
