Windows Server 2003 x64 and SQL 2006 x64

I have a new server with Windows Server 2003 64bit installed and want to also install SQL 2005 64bit.

Would love to hear from others who have tried this or are running this environment.

Ditto. 64 bit takeup is reasonably rare even among enthusiasts - I've never heard of a 64 bit rollout in a corporate environment - there are just too many problems trying to run software that isn't 64 rated.

FWIW, I don't even think that the RE application can do 64.

About to buy new server

Hi,

We are looking to buy a new database server with Windows 2003 x64 and SQL Server 2005.

Blackbaud says they do not support the 64bit OS with Raisers Edge, yet; they are still testing the software. Though Financial Edge does work in the 64bit OS.

Did you go with the 64 bit and did you run into any problems with Raisers Edge 7.81?

Thanks,

Matt

RE and x64 OS - Virtual Servers, etc.

Matt,

We ran MS Virtual Server on Windows 2003 x64 and setup the virtual as Windows x32.

We dedicated one Xeon 3.2 dual core chip to the Virtual and 6 Gigs of RAM. The performance was slower than our current server with 2 Xeon 3 single core chips so we wiped the drives and started over with x32.

MS virtual Server currently does not allow harvesting of more than a single core on a chip, if it had it might have worked.

Folks were concerned that BB did not support x64 so they did not want me to try.

Jeff

Thanks for the info. I am not too eager to run RE in a virtual machine. Right now we are getting enough complaints when things run slow in the middle of the day.

We use VMware for our virtual environment but I think the overall performance hit might be too much.

We will probably end up getting a 64 bit server but only run 32bit OS on it like you mentioned. Hopefully Blackbaud will soon finish testing and support RE in a 64bit environment and we can take advantage of the new processing power.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi,

I'm setting up a new Raiser's Edge server here as well. I got a server with a Xeon 5110 processor, which can do both x64 and x32. Can anyone confirm that Raiser's Edge will work on a machine that has the 32 bit version of the Windows Server 2003 OS and SQL Server 2005? It sounds like it should.

Roger
