Question barcode scanning volunteer hours

My supervisor is looking for a way to be able to check volunteers in and out via their membership card's barcode when they come in to help out. Right now our desk scanners at the entrances are set up to automatically add an action to the record when their card is scanned when a member visits the Museum. Is there some way (without APIs/programming knowledge) to set up automation to track to a volunteer time sheet when a card is scanned? If not, should we set up scanning in excel as to time in and out and the date and then import back into RE on a regular basis? If anyone has any tips I'd appreciate hearing. I did see an older post that discussed checking people in offsite for meetings, which was helpful, but I am wondering in particular about barcode scanning into the volunteer record directly so that we can avoid the importing work.

Thanks,

Erica

Erica, I think you are out of luck scanning directly into RE without the API. But scanning to an Access DB and then Importing into RE has real potential. Once set up it should be really an easy import. I'd investigate Access rather than Excel as either is going to need a bit of programming and Access would certainly be more robust.

Best,

Robert

Thanks, Robert, this is what I suspected but I wanted to double check to make sure since my supervisor is coming up with a lot of ideas of what he wants and I keep having to tell him that RE just can't do that right out of the box. I don't have any experience with access, but it might be worth learning to give this a try.
