Question How to group categories?

Hi, i am a new user of Raisers Edge and would really appreciate some help.

I need to group together people who are members and their family (i.e. partner and children) are also members. Therefore, i need to group families who have children, families which just consist of husband and wife, families whose children are under 5, families with children whom are teenagers etc.. and how many adults there are per household..

I hope this makes sense. I need to export this into Excel with all the categories grouped. Please can somebody help me with this?

Many thanks,

Farrah

I'm not 100% sure I understand what you're trying to do .. but, how do you handle family memberships? Is it one membership that several people can use, do they all have individual memberships? are all the people you need to group together linked via relationships with their own constituent records? for the age portion.. do you store birthdays in Raiser's Edge? If not, I'm not sure how you'll go about that part.

Farrah,

This all depends on how you have this information stored in RE. Do you have relationships recorded for all children? Do you have birthdates for all children, etc.

There is a query field called total individual relationships but it does not allow you to filter on relationship/reciprocal to get child/son/daughter, etc. If you also have in there any non-family or grandparents, aunts uncles they would be counted as well.

You can probably do some querying to find individual constituents without a relationship of child/son/daughter (whatever you use on kids) - then you will get those without kids. You can also query on whether or not there is a spouse relationship to know if they are single or married with no kids.

You can also get a query group of those with kids/teens based on birthdate assuming you have all the birthdates. You can also query like above on whether or not there is a spouse relationship to know if they are single or married with kids.

I can imagine this would be 6 queries:

No Kids No Spouse
No Kids With Spouse
Young Kids No Spouse
Young Kids With Spouse
Teens No Spouse
Teens With Spouse

Someone with teens and young kids would be in two queries. You need to decide which one you want to count them in or if both is okay.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

yes it is quite confusing..

ok well i will try and explain it as best as i can as im still relatively new to all this...
members can be either an adult and child on their own, or an adult who can add several family members to their membership, so say an female adult joins and so does her husband and 2 kids. The female adult will have the primary relationship, the husband will be added as a concession friend and will have a secondary relationship as well as the kids. all these people will have their individual records but will be linked to the primary member...(hope that makes sense).
Therefore, what i need to do is break down the household numbers, i.e. how many adults who have a membership live at the same address, also group together 3 or more adult only households, households with adults and children. Furthermore, i need to group different family categories, i.e. families with children under 5, teenagers etc.. and yes they have their date of birthe recorded in RE.

Does that make any sense at all?

If I understand what you are trying to do, it can't be done in Raiser's Edge. HOWEVER, I see that you also have The Information Edge. It is possible to do this kind of manipulation in TIE. Talk to your TIE guru about what you want to accomplish, and they should be able to help you get that information out of TIE.

The big problem with RE is that it can only use data from one top-level record to make decisions about groups and it sounds like your memberships are set so that you would need to look at multiple top-level records. TIE does not have this restriction.
