Is there a way to get a query or a report that shows who gave the largest gift to each package of an appeal? Our appeals can have up to 40 packages (don't ask ) and I need to tell them who gave the largest gift in each package.
I thought about the top donor report, looking at specific appeals, and create an output query that a I could then use to get the fields that I need but it could be that a package's top donor might be number 300 in the whole list.
I also thought about the largest gift field in a constituent query but wasn't sure that would work either.
So currently I have a query that lists all donors from that appeal and I sort by package id and amount so that I can find the top donor in each package. In order to get a "report" I'll export the query and delete all of the rows that I don't want. Yuck!

You might find a solution by using a Pivot Report. It has some cool operations that you can't find anywhere else and it might be able to display just the top donor in each pacakge.

Harriet's right. I would create a pivot report based on a gift query. The query should contain, at minimum, the appeal, package, and gift amount. In your pivot report, you'll put the appeal and package on your row headers and add your largest gift amount to the totals area.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Harriet and Drew, I took the Pivot class at last year's Charleston conference and played in it a little. I'll attempt this and if I have any questions, I'll be back.
