New to Prospect Research

Well, I have now taken on prospect research in addition to database duties. I know that in a lot of smaller operations that these two duties are combined and maybe even some bigger ones. I have a few questions for those of you who do both....

1. What do you find your division of time is? Is it equally split between database and prospect research or is it more database or more prospect?

2. Do you have any good resources for starting a prospect research area? I have absolutely no experience in prospect research and need to hit the ground running.

Any suggestions, thoughts, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Stacey

Hi Stacy,
Welcome to the wonderful world of research!

One of the best resources for research is the PRSPCT-L listserv at: LISTSERV 15.0 - PRSPCT-L List at CHARITYCHANNEL.COM

Also see the APRA site with many other links (assoc of professional researchers):
Links

Some other great starting points can be found here:
David Lamb's Prospect Research Page
http://www.veritasinfo.com/
UVM Prospect Research and Reference Tools Home Page
NETSource@USC: Prospect Research

I have some VERY low tech personal pages on Google with forms and such (be kind):
http://hullsar.googlepages.com/prospectresearch%26management

Is this what you meant? I have tons if you'd like more.

you may also want to keep up on the latest blogs regarding prospect research. Go to technorati.com, and search blogs for "Prospect research". You can create a custom RSS feed from that search which will notify you if anyone blogs about research.

I know your pain.

I've been doing both for the last 6 years, across 2 different institutions.

The time difference is largely dependent on how mature your processes are. Here, where I am, in a small outfit that's just starting up, overall it's about 70/30 favouring database. IRL however, I might spend a few weeks without doing research, then then nothing but research for a while.

Sarah - If you have a more comprehensive list of resources (and also prospect/wealth screening vendors), please send them my way.

Thanks,
Cat

Hi,
Let's see, I've updated (kind of) this page: PRMDesk - PRM Library
I use these a lot: PRMDesk - My Links
This is about vendors (a little dated by now, but still useful): Prospect Management Before, During and After the Campaign

Some grant finding stuff here: ŠUniversity of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey
For medical ones, this is great: Penn State Hershey Research Development

I also attached 2 docs with a bunch of links that I used to send out to interested faculty and staff. If any of them are outdated, or you're looking for something specific, please let me know and I'll send the current ones.

Good luck and I hope these are helpful!
