I have recently been asked to help our RE users by solving a small problem. It's not a major issue as such things go, but it would save them a small amount of time and attention and they'd be ever so grateful for a solution. Which I haven't found. Which is why I'm asking here now.

When they add a file in Media, they want both to link to it (to save database size rather than embed) and also to thumbnail it (so they don't have to click-to-open to figure out what these files show).

Before I started, they got a completely blank area above the filename. Searching the official Blackbaud site, I found this problem mentioned but shrugged off as a Microsoft OLE issue. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the windows media viewer. Partial success. A thumbnail image now shows, but it is only the icon for the program which would normally open the file, not an actual preview image of the file.

Does anyone have suggestions for how to get this preview function to work? The link itself works, but it's only the preview thumbnail that fails to generate. I'd be happy to pursue the matter with Microsoft, but I haven't found a solution while searching there either. Has someone before me solved this problem? Actual solutions or hints on where to look next would both be appreciated.
