Question Upgrading from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005

Hi All,

Happy New Year! Back to work and on with the projects.

I will upgrading two SQL 2000 serveres to SQL 2005. On the first server I have BBNC database and RE database. On the second, FE database, Trackit database, WSUS.

Has anyone gone through this upgrade. If so, can you please share your experience with me. I need to plan for the project. Obviously, I'll do all the backups, etc. that are necessary. I just wonder what roadblocks I may encounter along the way.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I just did this (I was moving servers at the time, so a little different scenario, but still moved from 2k to 2005), and was surprised at the lack of problems. It was a very smooth transition from one to the other. Some things I have noticed so far with 2005: the BMC and the RE Connected Users plugin no longer properly show the connected user (sometimes REUser shows up, sometimes the name of the server shows up, etc). According to BB, its not using user licenses, so no big deal except when you want to see whose connected.

Also, so you know, the database doesn't automatically become a 2005 database. In the Microsoft SQL Server manager, there's an option for each database as to compatibility that you need to change from 80 (which is 2000) to 90 (which is 2005). Other then that, ours has been much more memory efficient (its still a memory hog, but just doesn't eat quite so much), so its rolling on...

If you use the SQL manager for 2000 a lot, be prepared for some change. The one for 2005 is completely different Some things I like, some things I don't, so we'll see...

I just made this server live yesterday for everyone, so we'll see how things go in the next week.

our experience

We just recently upgraded to 7.83 and sql 2005. There are some major differences GUI wise. The new mangement console is called Server Management Studio. RE details what you need to change between them when you do the upgrade. Make sure in the Studio and the Surface Area that the network settings and protocols both have everything but the last option enabled. Also, once you attach the database to 2005 you can NOT go back to 2000. Otherwise it was not a bad process. Just took time.

Thank you both so much for your feedback.

Rachel, you mentioned that RE details what you need to change between them when you upgrade. Are you referring to a knowledgebase solution on upgrading to SQL 2005?

Doug, thanks for the info on updating the database.

I'm doing two servers - so onward with fingers crossed.
