Online Communities & RE. Who? How?

'Hi all,

My organisation is looking to begin planning for establishing an online community for our alumni. We are currently at the very early stages of planning, however I'm already going to meetings and presentations, so I anticipate that at the very least I'll have some input... somewhere... in the process.

I'd like to ask any and all of you what vendors / systems you are using to create and manage your online communities, and an outline of the functionality that you have with it. Also, if possible, could a couple of pro's and con's be given for the products you use/have experience with?

I know of NetCommunity and another local vendor here, so I'm hoping that this thread doesn't become a venting point for frustrations with any particular vendor/product.

If you feel uncomfortable posting for the community, feel free to PM me.

Anything mentioned will be used by me to get ideas to research potential other vendors to consider.

cheers

Rob

Hi Rob,

I posted a similar question on TechSoup when I was looking to set up a community for a volunteer project I was doing (outside of work). If you want something informal, check out ning, collectivex, and airset. You may not be able to do a lot of customizing with it & it may not look as professional as you would like, but it is free. I think I'm going with collectivex for my project, but again, this is for a casual volunteer group. Either way, spend some time on the TechSoup posts.

Tina
