I don't know why it keeps happening but occasionally when I export donor acknowledgement letters from the Mail function in RE, when I merge it to a MS Word doc, the 'Field Calculation Error.." pops up and I can't merge the letters!.. The error will run through all the letters so if I had 78 letters, it would go Field Calculation Error 1, and then 2 and then 3, so on and so forth until #78 (which I usually force quit by error 2). If I re-mail merge the letter, it would do the same thing so I would have to close down and restart my computer. It usually happen on the second mail merge I do for the day which is odd.
I don't think it's something to do with the computer settings because this has happen to two different organisations I worked with.
Please let me know if this happen to anyone else and what the solution is to this annoying problem.
what version of word are you using, and what fields are you exporting? Is this a complicated conditional merge, or something simple?
I'm curious because there was a similar problem I was having in word 2000, with a conditional merge that pulled in text from several other documents, and googling turned up that it was a glitch that was solved in XP and 2003.
I'm using MS Word 2003 (on Windows XP) with the conditional merge (I am pulling the text of the letters from different documents into one mail merge file).
The fields I'm exporting are «Addressee» «Position» «Organization_Name» «Address_line_1» «Address_line_2» «Address_line_3» «City» «Province» «Postal_Code» «Salutation» «Gift_Amount» «Fund_description1» «Program_1» «Gift_Reference»
I wonder if it is because the different acknowledgement letters have different required merge fields (i.e. our Alumni letter only needs the Addressee/Salutation, Address and Gift amount but our other letters require more merged fields).
Do you know if it is a RE problem or a MS Word problem?
I think it might be a Word problem. Are any of your merge fields used in a calculation in the letter? What might be differentabout the second mail merge you do every day? Does restarting your computer fix the problem every time?
