Outlook Contact Help Needed

Our organization recently changed to Outlook from Groupwise for our email provider.
I have entered contact information in Outlook. In the contact form, I have entered the email address for the contact and have removed the default email address from the "Display As" section. Example:
Email: johndoe@abc.org Display As: john doe
When I choose this contact to send an email to, Outlook displays "John Doe (johndoe@abc.org) in the "To" line of the email.
I would like to just list the name (John Doe) in the "To" line and not have the email adddress there also.
Is there a way to do this? Please help!!
Thanks,
Kazooassistant-Outlook newbie

If you open a new message and then select the person you are sending the email to instead of right clicking on the contact and selecting "new message" it will display in the To line with just the contact name. I don't know why that is, but that's how I got around it.

Also, if you are in the message you are sending and right-click on the name, click on "Send to xxxx@xxx.com" or whatever the e-mail address comes up and it will go out with just the e-mail address - no name. Are you just trying to avoid people seeing each other's e-mail addresses or did I miss the reasoning behind this or what? Sleeping behind the wheel of the bus . . . LOL!!

I too am confused about why it matters. I believe the display option is is for how it will display in your own outlook contact list - not how it displays in emails.

I think that as long as you put the email addresses in the To line they are accessible to everyone who receives the email. They may even display completely differently depending on the email system they are using to receive the email.

To completely hide the email addresses being mailed to you need to use BCC (Blind Carbon Copy).

Yes, the reason I'm trying to do this is to remove the email address so I can avoid other people seeing the email address for each person on a large contact list. It will also help in cleaning up the "To" section of the email so I can see exactly who I'm sending the email to.
I'm still working on this...so far I've had no luck.
Thanks for the suggestions so far!!!

If you are including them in the To section of your email then the addresses will always be accessible to all people on the list. To hide who is getting the email you can only do that with BCC.

Though decidedly laborious, you can edit the ‘Display As’ field of each email record to remove the email portion

But only from the "Display" and only on your machine. The email is still included in the email "To" list and can be seen by anybody who is interested.

As Melissa said, the only way to be sure that nobody can see anybody else's email address on a group email is to put the email address in the BCC field. However, there is another option. You can send individual emails to each person so that there are no other email addresses to read. This is actually a lot easier to do than it seems. MS Word has the option to "Merge to email" which will allow you to do just that. (There are also other programs, but most people already have Word.)

RE: Outlook Contact Help Needed

But I still believe that is only how it displays in your own Outlook. You send that email to someone else their system will decide how to display it and they will likely have the option of adding all of those contacts to their address book and or reply to all and see all of their email addresses. I believe you can only truly HIDE using BCC.
