Use RE to track inventory?

Good morning,

Our Alumni Relations area has lotts of stuff that they keep for giveaways, contests, sales, etc. Frames, tshirts, logoed materials. They ahve asked me if I can develop an inventory management system for this.

Is there precedent for adapting something like this into RE?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Surely, you've been reading the thread about RE not being an accounting system. It's also not an inventory management system.

Events does have some inventory management tools, but it's really not designed for that. You are forced to create arbitrary event and registrant records just to get access to the inventory management tools, and those tools are not very robust.

You are much better off exploring other options.

I agree with Drew, RE is probably not the best bet; however if you are determined to use RE I would suggest creating an event called "Inventory", each time you add to your inventory log it as an expense and then use benefits to track the outflows. This won't allow for any real inventory control or other means of actual inventory tracking.

Do you have any other software recommendations for something we could use. Something simple must exist out there...

Why not check with your bookstore on campus? They must have a system that would be compatible for keeping track of inventory.

After working logistics for a couple of years, I would suggest using access. Inventory management systems are expensive and over kill for what you want to do. You can also check with your procurement or supply department.

I was also going to suggest using MS Access. My version (2003) has a template for "Inventory Control". I've never used it, so I can't tell you how good it is, but it would certainly be a good place to start.

Drew
MS Access was also my first thought, and, since the Inventory Control template allows selection of the fields needed, it looks like it would be useful at different levels - it can be set up to track only basic info or info that is more complex.

I sent a link of MS Offices inventory templates in Access and Excel to the person who asked me to build this. I await their response

I also would advise to build / acquire a system in Access - There is also a side benefit here - barcode inventory control. There are quite a few freeware plugins to access that allows for barcoding controls.

cheers

This is true I know when RE is installed on our computers we can use the font 3of9 which is barcode standard. You would have to create your own labels, which is easy. Then you can use VBA to convert the 3of9 to another font. You can also find barcode scanner for $110 online.
