General Description
The Wilderness Society (TWS) is a leading national conservation organization dedicated to building and sustaining a nationwide network of wilderness and other wild lands seeks a Controller to manage the operations of the accounting department, ensure integrity of general financial data, the timeliness of information, and compliance with GAAP.
Responsibilities
Supervision of general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll
Revenue processing
Balance sheet account reconciliations
Sales & use tax and personal property tax compliance
General management reporting
Financial, pension and payroll audits
Form 990 and state returns
Functions
Process and reconcile revenues from fundraising system
Review accounting deposits on weekly or more frequent basis.
Ensure timely distribution of accurate general management reports
Work with Membership, Development, and other accounting staff to resolve revenue differences
Ensure timely recording of financial information in general ledger from accounts payable and payroll systems
Ensure timely filing of state tax compliance
Review endowment accounting transactions and monthly spending entry
Qualifications
Skills and Knowledge:
At least 6 years of progressive accounting experience with 3-4 years of supervisory experience; CPA preferred.
Knowledge of finance, accounting and budgeting principles including GAAP.
Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections. Working knowledge of short and long term budgeting and forecasting.
Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects
Experience professional working with client-server accounting systems, preferably JD Edwards
Experience preparing IRS Form 990 and NY return
Knowledge of investment accounting and related GAAP
Knowledge of split-interest agreements, including related GAAP and reporting requirements
Knowledge of payroll processing in multi-state environment and with automated payroll systems, preferably ADP
Experience with project or job cost environment
Sound customer service skills
Ability to work under pressure and to meet tight deadlines
