As Rice University launches a new vision for its second century, the university seeks to significantly expand its philanthropic capacity. The Resource Development division has recently reorganized to create a Research and Strategy team, under the leadership of the Director of  Campaign and Prospect Strategy. This team will serve as a catalyst for broadening the university’s prospect base and will work with fundraisers to maximize the university’s philanthropic capacity. Toward these goals, the Development Data Analyst will work closely with the Director of Campaign and Prospect Strategy to analyze and improve fundraising performance through the design, implementation, and interpretation of operational reports. The Development Data Analyst will play a key role in the development and ongoing maintenance of a data warehouse for creating operational reports. Successful candidates will have strong analytical and data modeling skills, an inquisitive nature, and a strong track record of creative problem solving. The Development Data Analyst will collaborate with Development Services staff to design and maintain a data warehouse; design and implement operational reports to track actual progress of fundraising programs toward campaign and fiscal year goals; develop and validate statistical models for forecasting the fiscal year and campaign progress using historical trend data and information from industry peers; analyze and interpret the data to identify issues and recommend appropriate methods to resolve; develop and implement predictive models for identifying new prospects for the university’s fundraising efforts; work with other Research and Strategy team members to validate results and track success of the proactive identification efforts; collect data and maintain ongoing peer benchmarking studies on a variety of aspects in development and alumni relations; oversee the university’s participation in various institutional surveys relevant to fund-raising and alumni relations programs; translate the information gathered into useful tools for development and alumni relations staff; organize and maintain analyses and reports for regular, systematic dissemination and, upon request, retrieval of archived information. Required: Bachelor’s degree, preferably with emphasis in mathematics, statistics, financial analysis, or similar relevant coursework; minimum of three to five years experience in analyzing and synthesizing complex data sets and producing highly readable, informative reports for a variety of audiences, including non-technical users; expertise with a variety of analytical and database software, including Excel, Access, statistical analysis and forecasting programs (e.g. SPSS, SAS, Crystal Ball, Forecast Pro), and presentation software; expertise in SQL report writing, especially using Crystal Reports; strong understanding of data mining and predictive modeling tools and techniques; strong analytical and data interpretation skills; detail-oriented, creative, inquisitive, persistent, and self-motivated in applying research and analytical abilities in meaningful ways to support the university’s fundraising goals; exemplary computer, information management and data retrieval skills, excellent communication and statistical analysis skills; must be comfortable managing multiple projects while working under tight deadlines; ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced collaborative team environment; ability to maintain a very high level of confidentiality regarding the research projects being conducted. Preferred: Master’s degree; experience in the field of higher education or other non-profit institution with a focus on fundraising; experience with alumni/development databases (experience with Millennium is desirable); experience developing and maintaining a data warehouse; experience developing and validating forecasting methods.
