Organization Overview: Room to Read’s mission is to provide under-privileged children with an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. The organization was founded on the belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and taking control of one’s own life. We currently work in Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Room to Read is a results-driven organization that seeks to intervene early in a child’s life to provide ongoing educational opportunities in their communities. We have developed a successful approach to building educational infrastructure and opportunities which consists of: • Partnering with communities to build schools through our challenge grant program • Establishing bi-lingual libraries • Publishing local language children's books • Establishing computer and language labs • Providing long-term scholarships to girls In Room to Read’s first five years, the global team has already built 200 schools, opened more than 2,500 libraries, donated over 1.2 million children’s books, published 77 new local language children’s books, provided over 1,750 girl long-term scholarships, and established 85 new computer and language rooms. Our long-term goal is to help 10 million children to gain the lifelong gift of education. Opportunity: Room to Read has experienced tremendous growth since its founding in 2000. We are now seeking a Development Analyst to support our fundraising efforts from individuals, schools, foundations, and corporations. The Development Associate will be an integral part of our dynamic San Francisco-based development team and will report directly to the Chief Development Officer. It is expected that the person hired for this position will stay in the analyst role for a period of two years.
Primary Duties: • Provide support to the development team through donor communication, fundraising campaigns, and travel arrangements. • Compile detailed research on prospective donors including individuals, foundations and corporations. • Coordinate the development team’s use of our fundraising database, Raiser’s Edge, including entering new contacts, maintaining accurate records and running reports. • Serve as the first "point of contact" within the development team to ascertain new potential donors and fundraising opportunities that are presented to the organization. • Initiate and respond to routine correspondence about the launch of John Wood’s book “Leaving Microsoft to Change the World” which will be published by Harper Collins in late August 2006. • Provide logistical support and event planning for fundraising events held throughout the country, including ensuring accurate detailed reporting on all donations from events. • Help maintain donor records in the Raiser’s Edge fundraising database, and serve as the main point of contact to run reports for mass mailings and other donor communications. • Assist with all mass mailings including the coordination of the annual appeal, the Girls’ Scholarship Yearbook, and all other major donor communications efforts. • Help support events that are run by the volunteer chapters, to raise awareness and money for Room to Read. • Provide detailed research on individuals, corporations and foundations to support the Development Team’s fundraising efforts. • Facilitate travel arrangements and other logistical issues to assure maximum effectiveness and efficiency of the overall team. • With the Development Associate, Coordinate an annual conference for the Volunteer Chapter Leaders, held in March. • Serve as point person in the review and dissemination of project reports to current donors. • Serve as primary point of contact for development team for website and phone inquiries. • Along with other junior members of Room to Read staff, provide backup phone support for Office Manager. Qualifications: Required: • Bachelors degree • 1-2 years general work experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented organization • History of dedicated volunteer activity and/or commitment to non-profit organizations • Adept at using Excel and Word • Excellent interpersonal and writing skills • Strong attention to detail and extremely organized • Results oriented • Flexibility and ability to multi-task Preferred: • Experience working with databases, specifically Raiser's Edge • Experience living or working internationally To be successful as a member of the Room to Read team, you will also: • Have a passion for our mission and a strong desire to impact an up-and-coming non-profit organization • Be an innovative and creative thinker – you are not afraid to try something new and inspire others to do so • Have a very high level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness • Have a strong work ethic, take initiative, and require minimal direction • Work well independently as well as part of a team • Thrive in a fast-paced and fun environment Compensation: The salary range for this position will be determined based upon the experience of the candidate hired. Health, dental, and 401k benefits are also provided.
