About the World Affairs Council

of Dallas/Fort Worth

For more than half a century, the World Affairs Council has educated North Texans by presenting current, accurate and engaging information on crucial issues of global significance. In addition to providing the community with first-hand exposure to world leaders, policy makers, ambassadors, journalists, and other world affairs experts, the Council manages the Dallas Office of Protocol, a unique public/private partnership which works with the Mayor, city officials, the diplomatic corps and other international stakeholders to represent the City of Dallas in official international activities. In 2005, we pioneered the International Education Initiative, which takes international education directly into area schools and has reached almost 160,000 students in the last three years. North Texans also have opportunities to interact cross-culturally through our International Visitors program, which brings U.S. State Department-sponsored delegations to North Texas to participate in person-to-person exchanges.

In February 2007, we received the World Affairs Councils of America’s highest honor, the President’s Award, naming us “the most dynamic large council in the nation.” This award recognizes outstanding achievement and is given annually for “extraordinary innovation, growth, outreach, and impact.” (Other councils considered for this distinction included those in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.) Just two years ago, the World Affairs Council won the same award at the mid-sized level. With a membership that has more than doubled since 2006, the Council has now won the two most prestigious national awards in three years. Locally, the Council was a finalist for the Center for Nonprofit Management’s 2007 Award of Excellence in Mission Achievement. We believe this is validation of the impact we are having among local citizens and thousands of students.

The Council currently has more than 3,300 members – a cross-section of the Metroplex’s most educated, engaged and affluent professionals as well as young professionals, teachers and students. Almost 65% of members’ household income is over $100,000; 31% is over $200K; and 7% is over $500K. Most all of our members have college degrees, with more than 50% holding advanced degrees. Many have multiples advanced degrees. Of our members, 73% travel domestically six or more times per year, and 75% travel internationally at least once every year. Almost half speak a foreign language, and 78% list reading as a hobby.

The World Affairs Council is sought out by publishers, authors, diplomats and politicians as the premier non-profit, non-partisan forum in North Texas. We intend to continue this trend of increasing outreach and membership as the foremost regional provider of international services through our Speaker’s Platform (open to both our members and the general public), Dallas Protocol, International Education Initiative and exchange programs.
