Major Gifts Manager - The San Francisco SPCA

Summary:
The Major Gifts Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of the Heart of Gold Society, the SPCA’s major gifts program and significantly increasing major donor giving, under the direction of the Director of Development. The Major Gifts Manager will partner with staff and board members on the completion of the Capital Campaign for The Leanne B. Roberts Animal Care Center and the development of future campaigns
Essential Duties and Functions:
Heart of Gold Society
  • Manage the major donor giving program, the Heart of Gold Society.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies and cultivation events
  • Responsible for identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and prospects for major ($1,000 and over) annual gifts.
  • Develop and produce all written materials including the Heart of Gold letters, renewal and acknowledgement letters, articles, newsletters and event invitations.
  • Develop and sustain individual relations with donors through phone calls, personal visits and events. Follows-up on benefits for each Heart of Gold level.
  • Work with Heart of Gold volunteers and Board members to identify and attract new Heart of Gold members.
  • Work with the President, Director of Development and staff in identifying prospective donors through Raiser's Edge.
  • Develop strategies and implement plan to increase current donors to higher levels of giving.
  • Manage the process for marketing, receiving and acknowledging gifts of stock and real property.
Capital Campaign
  • Develop materials, correspondence and collateral pieces to communicate the Capital Campaign for the new Leanne B. Roberts Animal Care Center.
  • Manage a list of recognition opportunities and prepare materials for final donor approval.
  • Work with Capital Campaign Committee Chairs and Director of Development to generate prospect lists.
  • Prepares individuals packets for Capital Campaign prospects.
  • Prepares Capital Campaign acknowledgement letters and sends pledge reminders.
  • Assists in the writing and preparation of grant proposals for foundations and corporations.
  • Develops materials (letters, articles in Our Animals, etc.) to communicate current status of Capital Campaign to donors and the general public.
  • Reconciles campaign gifts with the Finance Department.

  • Practice and promote the humane treatment of animals
  • Attend various special events, promotions, and community functions as a representative of The SF/SPCA.
Customer Service
  • Provide quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs and events.
Volunteers
  • Provide leadership and development for the Development Department’s volunteer corps and ensure effective use of resources and talents.
  • Work cooperatively with all volunteers and recognize the talent and commitment they bring to the Society.
Safety
  • Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices.
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal, or the organization at risk.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment
  • Frequently lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds when moving supplies and managing special events
  • Typically stands, bends, stoops and crouches while working special events
  • Regularly moves about the campus to tour donors and coordinate work
  • Occasional weekend and evening work
  • Consistently exposed to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available
Reporting Relationships and Contacts:
  • Reports to the Director of Development
  • Works with Board members and other Heart of Gold volunteers
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors Degree and a minimum of five years fundraising experience, Master Degree desirable. Minimum of three years management experience.
  • Two years demonstrated success managing a major gifts program and soliciting major gifts
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of The San Francisco SPCA.
  • Experience working on successful Capital Campaigns
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate the Society’s mission and needs to diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to make-the-ask and cultivate long term donor relationships. Knowledge of moves management.
  • Proven organizational and planning skills with a demonstrated ability to lead and manage.
  • Sound judgment and ability to exercise complete discretion when dealing with confidential information.
  • Demonstrated experience using the MS Office suite. Experience using fundraising software (Raiser's Edge preferred.)
  • Compassion for animals who is comfortable in the animal shelter environment and willing to accommodate animals in the work place
The SF/SPCA requires pre-employment drug testing and criminal background investigations

Salary and Benefits:
The starting salary for this position depends on the length and breath of experience.
