Job Description:

PROGRAM / DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Resource Development Department raises private funds to support Mercy Corps’ mission.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Database Manager manages Mercy Corps’ donor database, ensuring its integrity and sound use by the RD team; this includes responsibility for extracting data for solicitations and research, as well as establishing the overall coding structure and database policies. The Database Manager helps ensure the timely reporting and analysis of critical marketing and fundraising data to help guide and support the RD team’s strategic decisions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Work with RD team members to ensure database integrity, relevant coding schemes, processes which stand up to audit, and data entry that adheres to necessary standards.

Manage private donor database and serve as primary liaison with database vendor. Request technical support and assistance, as necessary. Remain current on new upgrades and applications of the database. Train department staff in new software features.

Work with IT team to maintain optimal network operating environment for Raiser’s Edge database and users.

Interface and collaborate with Marketing team to design testing and reports.

Produce data selects and export files for solicitations and research projects. Where appropriate, train and oversee other staff members to complete these tasks.

Provide technical support to organization’s demographic research efforts, enabling us to know more about donors and how to market more effectively to them.

Work with others to create, prepare and interpret reports that detail and analyze the performance of marketing and fundraising efforts to all donor segments.

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts towards accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Organizational Learning - As part of Mercy Corps’ agency-wide Organizational Learning Initiative, all team members are responsible for spending 5% of their work time in formal and/or non-formal professional learning activities.

Other duties as requested or required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

This position may be responsible for the oversight of one or more junior level database developers whose role will be primarily data entry and extraction.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Managing Director, Marketing and Communications

WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: RD Team Leaders; IT staff; Finance staff.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

College degree or equivalent in a related field.

Demonstrated technical competency with relational databases, especially Raiser’s Edge; also proficiency in Excel, and Crystal Reports. SQL is strongly preferred.

At least 4 years experience in database management and analysis

Excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills.

Strong customer service orientation including communication skills and approachability.

Good written and spoken communication skills.

LIVING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Position is based in Portland, Oregon at Mercy Corps Headquarters. Possible travel to NYC may be required.
