Purpose Supports the recording and reconciliation of the organization's financial information for internal and external reporting purposes. Accountabilities/Responsibilities - Support general accounting function in ensuring monthly reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts and, as needed, income statement accounts. Assume responsibility for a wide variety of accounting and financial analysis tasks and projects, including preparing necessary financial statements, schedules, reconciliations, ledger entries, analyses and allocations. Provide back up to Assistant Controller responsibilities as needed. - Record and reconcile major gifts, including restricted donations, capital campaign income, pledges, split interest agreements, and other major donor items. Serve as contact person for same with Major Gifts department. - Provide full cycle financial accounting support for restricted foundation and government gifts received, including preparation of proposal budgets, developing grant fund tracking systems, invoice of grantors as required, grant reporting and close out. Work with Major Gifts and Program staff closely on same. - Maintain financial information for IFAW's investments. Record and reconcile endowment activity on monthly basis for financial statement presentation. Liase with investment representatives to ensure timely reporting. Participate in quarterly meetings for review of ethical investing. - Update, modify and maintain detailed fixed asset register and depreciation schedule in compliance with accounting and audit requirements. Apply thorough understanding of current accounting regulations and pronouncements to properly capitalize and expense items. - Define, create, and implement internal reports and tracking systems to assist with IFAW's financial management. - Perform financial analyses, ad hoc reporting, and special project assignments as necessary, with a high degree of independence and decision making. - Assist with preparation of the annual organizational budget. Formulate the fundraising budget and enter into Oracle, in coordination with the Budget Analyst and the Development Office. - Support monthly and annual accounting closing processes, including recording adjusting entries, verifying account balances, and ensuring completeness and integrity of general ledger data. Provide detail and reconciliations necessary for annual audits, tax preparation, compliance reporting, and other special reporting as necessary. - Provide daily backup as needed in approving and posting general ledger entries. Record revenue data, reconcile bank accounts, and prepare internal reports in the capacity as backup to Accountant. - Supervise junior staff and perform other tasks as necessary. Requirements - Degree in accounting or finance. - Five or more years of general accounting experience with preference given to individuals with public accounting experience; CPA preferred. - Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, ability to work with high degree of independence. - Thorough knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and current accounting pronouncements. - Restricted foundation and government grant accounting experience strongly preferred. - Advanced desktop applications skills (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint); automated accounting software experience (Oracle preferred). - Excellent communications and interpersonal skills. Ability to work closely with all types of individuals, both financial and non-financial, within the organization as well as external. - International experience desirable. - Willingness and ability to undertake some international travel if necessary.
