So I have a family making a large donation (one from each brother). I'd like to either: fool RE into thinking their gifts count as the next higher donor category, or make it so they show up as a family unit in that higher donor category, not as two separate givers in the lower category. Thanks.
1. Set up two accounts one for each brother, Sam and Joe.
Soft credit Joe's gift to Sam's account and mark Joe's account for no recognition.
Indicate that Sam's account, with Joe's softcredit is to be recognized as the Johnson Family
2. Set up three accounts: Sam, Joe, and The Johnson Family
Softcredit both Sam's and Joe's gift to The Johnson Family

good ideas, but, see, the thing is, soft crediting is not recognized by the donor category report, and i'd prefer not to make a separate record for the family. my boss would like both brothers listed in a particular donor category. any suggestions?
You can choose to have soft credits recognised in the donor category report. There are three "radio" buttons on the left side of the set-up page :Soft credit gift to" donor, soft credit recipient, both. We use soft credit recipient and it works very well. I admit with your issue, I would put a note in my "Recognition Problem" file to manually double check, but SC should work.
